Offering a History Course Online

Posted on January 11, 2016 by Torie Wynn

Next week, Wichita State will be launching one of its first online courses in the History Department! HIST 132: American History 2 covers American history from the Civil War to modern day. In one of my first assignments as an Instructional Designer at Wichita State, I was asked to help design and develop the course. After a few months of hard work, the class is finally ready for its first batch of students (100 of the to be exact)!

One of the most exciting aspects of this course is the course textbook. HIST 132 students will be using an Open Educational Resource or OER. This online textbook is free to use, so our students won’t have to pay a penny!

Over the next few months, I’ll pay close attention to student feedback about the course. While I hope that they’ll all love the course, we all know that developing effective courses takes time, trial, and error. If you’d like to take a look at the current course, check out this HIST 132 Course Tour!
