What do WSU Libraries have for you this holiday season? FOUR great services just waiting to help you out in your online/hybrid/f-2-f classes:
- VAST from Alexander Street: The VAST film library has over 20,000 titles in their streaming video collection. You can browse their content here, and to locate films for use in courses, simply go the the WSU Libraries page and search in the Online Database called VAST. These videos contain transcripts, so you don’t have to worry about that aspect of ADA and 508 compliance, and they are very easy to embed or link to your Blackboard course. Your IDT team will be happy to help you get this going in your class if you have any needs at all.
- Films on Demand: The Films on Demand Master Academic Video Collection has 21,964 streaming videos with transcripts across nearly all academic fields. Together with the VAST database, you should be able to find content that can support your class, not cost your students any additional money, and fit right into online delivery. These films can be embedded and/or linked right into Blackboard as well, and as always, the IDT team is here to help you.
- Article Link Generator: Do you include articles from online databases in your Blackboard class? If so, you should be using the handy link generator provided by the library. Not only does it make getting the articles quick and easy for your students, it counts all the clicks that your course is sending to the library system. Why are clicks important to you? The library makes the decisions about what content/journals/databases to keep on the basis of verified use statistics. If you download a JSTOR article (for example) and provide the .pdf in your class, you are taking what could be a class full of “clicks” and reducing it to just one: the single time you accessed and printed the article. But those clicks count! Make sure your department has the best argument for keeping your favorite journals and databases: use this link generator and count the clicks. Think this looks complicated? Give IDT call and we can help you through the process.
- Embedded Librarians: Ready to cut to the chase? It might be time to put a librarian directly into your Blackboard class. Embedded librarians can provide content and specific suggestions for your students, and can be a great resource for students who are working on research projects. There are many ways we can help support this service as well, so again, if you have questions, call IDT for help.
