Are you a frequent user of the TurningPoint ResponseCards (“clickers”), or chair of a department whose faculty are among the more frequent users? If so, you need to know that the Media Resources Center will no longer be providing sets of audience response clickers for check-out starting this Fall semester. For more information, see the FAQs listed below.
Due to this change, Campus Media Services will be transferring at no charge and on a first-come, first-served basis the existing TurningPoint ResponseCard LCD clickers to departments who would be interested in maintaining a classroom set for their faculty. Please note that there will be an annual subscription through TurningPoint to use these clickers. The current configurations of these sets are as follows, which include protective carrying cases:
· Two (2) sets of 100 clickers each.
· Three (3) sets of 30 clickers each.
· One (1) set of 20 clickers.
If you are interested in taking ownership of any of these sets, please contact Ryan Corcoran at your convenience prior to Friday, September 9th, 2016. The MRC will transfer these to your department at no cost.
Thank you for your time, and please don’t hesitate to reach out to me with any questions or concerns regarding classroom technology.
Q: Why are you no longer providing clickers for checkout?
A: This is due to an unfortunate change in the business model of TurningPoint, who recently moved to a subscription-based model, requiring a separate subscription for each individual clicker. This would make it an unreasonable expense for us to spend year over year. The base price is about $20/year/clicker or $40 for four years. To maintain our current classroom sets would cost CMS over $6,500 per year; this money would be better spent on installed, integrated technology equipment that all faculty and staff would benefit from.
Q: What if I want to keep using TurningPoint clickers?
A: We (WSU) are not ending support of the TurningPoint technology—we will still be including the “Building Block” or plug-in to Blackboard as in the past. You can also still request the TurningPoint clickers be purchased by the University Bookstore for a required material for your course. The main difference now is that the students will be required to purchase or renew their subscription to use their clickers. The subscription is about $20/year or $40 for four years, but also gives the student access to the ResponseWare mobile app for use on their personal mobile devices.
Q: What other options do I have?
A: There are several other options out there that do not require physical hardware for response, but rather rely on devices that the students already have with them (mobile phones, tablets, laptops, etc.). Two such products are Socrative and PollEverywhere.com. Note that these options may require a paid subscription by the teacher or student. If you are interested in a physical clicker option, i>clicker is another option that has been tested in the past as well. The most important thing to note is that any solution chosen must adhere to federal FERPA requirements as well as University Policies. Please contact the Instructional Design & Technology (IDT) department for assistance with selecting the best technology for your class situation and curriculum.
